Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, a 24-year-old American, was arrested on March 26 for illegally visiting North Sentinel Island, home to a tribe that rejects outside contact. His actions were confirmed by his GoPro camera, where he admitted to whistling from a distance to get the tribe’s attention and leaving a Coke can and coconut on the beach. This was not his first attempt; he previously tried to reach the island twice within six months. Survival International condemned influencers like him for endangering both themselves and the tribe, highlighting the threats faced by isolated cultures. Access to the island has been banned since 1996 after past violent encounters.
