Seiji Godo, a Canadian residing in Switzerland and creator of the encrypted messaging service EncroChat, was charged in Lille on March 17 for allegedly facilitating criminal activities. Extradited from Switzerland, he maintains his innocence, claiming he was never summoned by authorities despite his known address. His lawyers assert that he hopes to clarify his role as a technical developer, not a criminal. EncroChat was dismantled in July 2020 after being infiltrated, leading to over 6,500 arrests and preventing numerous crimes. Several have also been charged internationally, highlighting ongoing investigations into other encrypted messaging services.
