Signature d’un accord de partenariat entre les SMA et la FAO pour la formation des commandants en matière de ressources forestières et hydriques
On Tuesday, the Algerian Muslim Scouts (SMA) signed a partnership agreement with the Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Algeria. This collaboration focuses on training scout leaders about the significance of forest and water resources in achieving sustainable development and combating climate change.
The signing event occurred during a study day organized in recognition of International Forest Day and World Water Day, and was attended by representatives from both organizations. The agreement was signed by Abderrezak Khouthiri, the Deputy General Commander of the SMA, and Irina Buttoud, the FAO representative in Algeria.
Khouthiri highlighted that the primary objective of the agreement is to initiate a training program for scout leaders, starting in Algiers and gradually expanding to other regions across the country. The training aims to educate scouts on the importance of preserving ecosystems, particularly forests, to mitigate fire risks and protect water resources.
Buttoud emphasized the crucial role of forests not only as a source of food and fuel but also in maintaining soil fertility, safeguarding environmental resources, and supporting biodiversity. She noted that enhancing ecological awareness through the SMA, which is a significant societal actor, will positively influence environmental protection efforts.
The study day also included discussions on the challenges associated with water scarcity in Algeria and the vital role of forest ecosystems. Additionally, there are plans for a cleanup campaign of the Sidi Fredj forest, involving scouts and other partners, alongside an interactive workshop aimed at increasing awareness of environmental protection.
This partnership represents a significant step towards involving youth in environmental safeguarding efforts, fostering an understanding of sustainable practices, and aligning local initiatives with global sustainability goals. Through education and community engagement, the SMA and FAO aim to cultivate a generation that is conscious of the environmental challenges faced by Algeria and proactive in pursuing meaningful solutions.
Overall, the collaboration between the Scouts and the FAO embodies a commitment to fostering ecological stewardship among youth, addressing critical environmental issues, and promoting sustainable development practices throughout Algeria.
