Les décisions du président de la République relatives à la prévention contre la drogue et les substances psychotropes « extrêmement importantes »

Summary of the Initiatives on Drug Prevention in Algeria

During a recent statement, Mustapha Hidaoui, the Minister of Youth and Chairman of the Higher Youth Council (CSJ), emphasized the critical significance of the recent measures announced by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune regarding drug and psychotropic substance prevention. These initiatives aim to align with the national strategy for combating drug-related issues and addressing the challenges these substances pose to society.

In a discussion with APS, Hidaoui underscored the importance of engaging in further study and dialogue around the national strategy and accompanying legislation aimed at preventing drug abuse. He noted that these strategies should be actively implemented to yield tangible results in combatting drug-related problems. Hidaoui highlighted that these measures would mobilize various sectors in collaboration with youth to confront this serious threat.

The minister pointed out that President Tebboune’s vision resonates effectively with the practical challenges faced by Algeria, particularly in drug warfare. He affirmed that this approach would enhance efforts across different sectors, augmenting legal and deterrent measures prescribed in the proposed drug prevention legislation.

Furthermore, the CSJ has proactively responded to the rising drug issue by communicating its concerns to the president during its session on December 19th. It urged an urgent and comprehensive response strategy. Following the assignment of this strategy to the National Office for Drug Abuse Control, the Council coordinated efforts with relevant sectors, providing insights from studies and surveys carried out among youth demographics.

One of the key recommendations by the Council involved developing a robust plan that addresses the gaps in current drug enforcement and prevention efforts. This includes executing extensive awareness campaigns that should not be confined to specific events but should also reach schools and institutions of higher education. The involvement of youth influencers and content creators is also crucial to disseminate a culture of awareness among teenagers and young adults.

Hidaoui reiterated his department’s commitment to combating drug abuse, highlighting its focus on youth and the availability of national infrastructure to support these efforts. The Ministry plans to develop activities guided by specialists and academics aimed at raising awareness and prevention. Additionally, there will be coordination with prison administration services to aid young individuals impacted by substance abuse, facilitating their reintegration into society.

The Minister conveyed a strong belief that Algeria’s youth, the country’s most valuable asset, faces persistent threats as illicit drugs are increasingly smuggled into the nation, jeopardizing national stability and security. Hidaoui asserted that the integration of a comprehensive drug prevention strategy, alongside enhancing youth engagement in entrepreneurship, innovation, and creativity, will serve as a buffer against these harmful external influences.

In summary, the consolidated efforts between the government, CSJ, and various stakeholders aim to thwart the infiltration of drugs into Algerian society. By combining legal frameworks with grassroots awareness initiatives and youth involvement, Algeria aspires to forge a resilient response to the growing challenge of drug abuse.
