Le cinéma algérien connait une « véritable dynamique »

Summary of the Revival of Algerian Cinema and Music Education Initiatives

On a recent Sunday in Algiers, M. Zouhir Ballalou, the Minister of Culture and Arts, highlighted the positive momentum in the Algerian cinema industry, which has gained traction since the national cinema meetings held in January 2023. The minister attended a screening of Khaled El Kebich’s film "Pour toi… Hasna" at the Algerian Cinematheque, coinciding with the celebration of the Victory Day on March 19. He noted a significant resurgence in the local film industry, evidenced by numerous film screenings organized by the Ministry and events hosted by professional associations, including festivals and cinematic workshops. Furthermore, film screenings are ongoing throughout the nation, especially in the southern regions, aided by mobile film caravans.

During the national cinema meetings, held at the behest of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Minister reported that over 300 films had been screened in various provinces, particularly in underserved areas. These activities align with the government’s initiative to stimulate the film sector, a strategy also emphasizing collaboration with industry professionals—including technicians, filmmakers, and actors—to create a comprehensive roadmap for advancing Algerian cinema.

In a bid to support this renaissance, the ministry is on the verge of finalizing legal texts needed to establish a National Film Commission. This move aims to dismantle existing barriers to film industry growth by refining regulatory frameworks concerning authorization, funding, and oversight. The renewed focus on addressing these industry challenges highlights a commitment to nurturing a thriving cinematic environment in Algeria.

The Minister also expressed satisfaction with recent developments in the music sector, announcing the establishment of 19 musical education schools within cultural centers across 19 provinces, currently enrolling 600 students. This initiative, developed in partnership with local authorities, reflects the government’s vision of promoting musical culture among youth and aligns with President Tebboune’s emphasis on the importance of education in both cinema and music during the national cinema meetings.

The film "Pour toi… Hasna," which premiered in February, poignantly addresses the hardships faced by Algerian families during the French colonial period. Its production was part of the ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Culture and Arts to enhance local cinematic expression through the Algerian Cinematographic Center.

In conclusion, the Algerian cultural landscape is experiencing a revitalization through the combined efforts in cinema and music education, reflecting a strong governmental commitment to fostering artistic endeavors and preserving national heritage. The ongoing projects and programs aim not only to celebrate the country’s past but also to inspire the next generation of artists.
