Creation of a National Desalination Company in Algeria and Future Water Management Plans
In an important announcement, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune revealed the government’s plan to establish a national company dedicated to the development and management of seawater desalination stations. This initiative underscores the country’s intent to leverage local expertise, particularly from young professionals who have been involved in various desalination projects undertaken by companies affiliated with Sonatrach, a major national firm.
During a recent media briefing broadcasted on national television and radio, President Tebboune expressed his pride in the achievements of national enterprises in implementing Algeria’s extensive desalination program. To date, five desalination plants have been completed, with four already operational and collectively capable of producing 1.5 million cubic meters of potable water per day. This achievement is significant, as it has allowed Algeria to save foreign currency reserves and reduce project completion times by approximately seven to eight months compared to international firms.
The president highlighted the impact of these new infrastructures on the nation’s water supply, noting that desalination will soon account for 72% of the potable water available to Algerian citizens. Building on this momentum, he announced a new program that will include the construction of six additional desalination plants, each with varying capacities, which marks a shift from the design of the previous five large plants, each capable of producing 300,000 cubic meters per day.
As part of this ambitious new agenda, construction has already started on a new desalination facility in the Tizi Ouzou region, which will have an initial capacity of 60,000 cubic meters per day. This project is expected to bolster regional water supplies and enhance community access to clean drinking water.
Overall, the establishment of a national desalination company and the planned expansion of water treatment facilities signal a proactive approach by the Algerian government to ensure sustainable water resources for its population, highlighting local talent and emphasizing self-sufficiency in water management. Through these initiatives, Algeria aims to address its water scarcity issues effectively and further solidify its economic independence from foreign technologies and services in the water sector.
