Djilali lance une campagne de reboisement à Sidi Abdallah
Reforestation and Environmental Awareness in Algeria
On Saturday, March 21, 2023, coinciding with the International Day of Forests, Algeria’s Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Nadjiba Djilali, led a reforestation initiative in Sidi Abdallah, Algiers, which involved planting 1,200 shrubs of various species. The campaign was titled "A Tree and Water, Foundation of Quality of Life" and aimed to celebrate the significance of forests while promoting environmental stewardship.
The event was a collaborative effort involving various sectors, organizations, and economic enterprises, while also receiving participation from environmental protection associations and groups from the Algerian Muslim Scouts (SMA). In her remarks, Minister Djilali emphasized that this initiative not only celebrated the International Day of Forests but also marked the conclusion of a six-month reforestation campaign aimed at enhancing green cover and improving the quality of life for residents.
Minister Djilali reiterated the commitment of the Ministry of Environment and Quality of Life to increase green spaces in new urban developments, aligning with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. She acknowledged the contributions of local authorities and involved organizations in their environmental protection efforts.
In addition to the reforestation activities, the minister launched a plastic bottle collection initiative, along with the installation of two sorting bins. She urged citizens to engage in eco-friendly practices and foster an economy based on recycling. The minister highlighted that plastic constitutes 15% of waste and is a vital material for recycling and developing a circular economy. She cited an example of a successful initiative where volunteers across the 58 provinces of Algeria collect plastic caps, which benefits children with disabilities, resulting in an average collection of 12 tons of caps annually.
Moreover, Minister Djilali presided over an award ceremony for children who participated in a drawing workshop focused on environmental themes, promoting awareness and engagement among the younger generation.
This reforestation and recycling initiative reflects the broader efforts of the Algerian government to enhance environmental quality, promote sustainable practices, and engage citizens in collective action to protect the natural environment. The collaborative spirit demonstrated during the event indicates a growing recognition of the interconnectedness of human activities, environmental health, and quality of life.
As Algeria continues to face environmental challenges, the commitment to these initiatives is essential for fostering long-term ecological sustainability and resilience against environmental degradation. By encouraging active participation from various sectors of society, Algeria aims to cultivate a culture of environmental respect and responsibility, ultimately enhancing the living conditions for its citizens.
