Reforestation Efforts in Algiers: A Green Initiative for 2024-2025

On the occasion of the International Day of Forests, Sabrina Hakkar, the Director of Forests and the Green Belt of Algiers, announced that over 235,000 trees had been planted in the city during the 2024-2025 reforestation season. This initiative, overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fishing, includes both forest and urban trees as part of a broader strategy to enhance Algiers’ greenery.

During a statement to the press at the Bouchaoui Forest in western Algiers, Hakkar noted that out of the total number of trees planted, 52,000 were sourced from the municipal nursery managed by her department. These efforts are part of development projects funded through the regional budget aimed at promoting environmental sustainability.

As part of the planting ceremony, 400 Aleppo pines were sown with the involvement of government officials, community members, and local associations. Hakkar emphasized that these reforestation campaigns play a significant role in combating desertification, thanks to active participation from all segments of society, including civil organizations and schools. She acknowledged the involvement of children in these initiatives across several municipalities, highlighting the educational aspect of fostering environmental stewardship from an early age.

In her remarks, Hakkar also praised the proactive measures implemented by the state to address forest fires, noting that there had been no recent incidents in the capital. This success was attributed to the diligent efforts of public authorities and the increased awareness among citizens about fire prevention.

Hamid Bensaâd, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture, also spoke at the event, pointing out a growing awareness of reforestation’s importance. He mentioned various citizen-led initiatives popping up on social media that focus on expanding forested areas. Bensaâd stressed that forests are economically important, offering food, natural resources, and job opportunities.

He also highlighted the Green Dam project launched in 2023 under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s supervision, aimed at expanding forested areas and introducing new tree species to bolster the national economy. This follows a convention signed in December 2024 between the forestry sector and the Sonatrach Group, committing to the planting of more than 430 million trees over a span of 520,000 hectares. This initiative is expected to absorb carbon emissions and reinforce the national reforestation efforts.

To honor the contributions of individuals and organizations supporting these environmental initiatives, the Ministry of Agriculture recognized 52 associations and 11 municipal council presidents for their roles in reforestation campaigns and the preservation of Algeria’s forestry resources. The Algeria Press Service (APS) was also commended for its diligent media coverage that supports the ministry’s activities.

Bensaâd emphasized the critical role of APS in delivering real-time information and raising public awareness about environmental protection and the significance of forests.

Overall, this collaborative effort in Algiers reflects a multifaceted approach to environmental conservation, focusing on community involvement, proactive government policy, and the importance of education in fostering a culture of environmental responsibility. The reforestation campaigns not only address ecological challenges but also contribute economically and socially to the community, reinforcing the connection between sustainable practices and overall well-being.

By planting trees and nurturing the involvement of citizens, Algeria aims to create a more sustainable future, demonstrating that concerted efforts at both the individual and institutional levels can lead to significant positive change in environmental health and resilience.
