Summary of Drowning Incidents in Algeria: June Report
In June, Algeria experienced a troubling rise in drowning incidents across its coastal areas and water reserves, with a total of 59 fatalities reported by the Civil Protection agency.
Coastal Drownings
Of the 59 drowning deaths, 40 occurred along the coastline, which comprises 14 wilayas. Among the coastal fatalities:
- 18 individuals drowned at unauthorized swimming locations.
- 22 were reported from monitored beaches.
Notably, 12 of these drownings at monitored beaches took place outside designated surveillance hours. The most impacted areas were:
- Mostaganem: 11 deaths
- Oran: 6 deaths
- Bejaia and Annaba: 5 deaths each
The report indicates a 3.4% increase in drownings at sea compared to June of the previous year, highlighting a concerning trend.
Drowning Incidents in Water Reserves
In addition to coastal drownings, 19 fatalities occurred in water reserves, including 11 in ponds. This area also saw a significant increase, with a 9.2% rise from the previous year’s figures.
Civil Protection Response
In response to these incidents, the Civil Protection services reported a total of 9,990 interventions at monitored beaches. The outcomes of these interventions included:
- 6,465 lives saved from drowning situations.
- 2,781 individuals treated on-site.
- 658 people evacuated to local health facilities for further care.
The wilaya of Boumerdès recorded the highest number of interventions at 1,577, followed closely by Ain Temouchent with 1,519 and Bejaia with 1,413.
