Summary of Developments for Pilgrimage Flights from Algiers International Airport

The number of flights from Algiers International Airport to Islamic holy sites for pilgrimage has been increased to 53 this year, as announced by Mokhtar Saïd Mediouni, CEO of the Algerian Airport Services and Infrastructure Management Company (SGSIA). This initiative reflects ongoing efforts to enhance the reception conditions for pilgrims.

In a radio interview, Mediouni detailed that preparations began months in advance to ensure optimal support for the hajis. This includes establishing several dedicated reception facilities and improving logistics to minimize baggage handling delays, which reached a record time of 33 minutes last year. To address this, the SGSIA has hired seasonal staff to assist with baggage, although this is typically the responsibility of the airlines.

Additionally, the SGSIA has made provisions for the companions of the pilgrims, creating outdoor reception areas equipped with prayer rooms, restrooms, vending machines for hot and cold beverages, and snack trucks to accommodate those waiting.

Furthermore, plans are underway to transfer Umrah flights to Terminal 2, which is currently designated for Hajj flights. This move aims to free up Hall 2 of Terminal 1 for other international flights, particularly those to Europe. Mediouni stated that this transition will enhance the airport’s capacity with the goal of surpassing the record of over 10 million passengers in 2024 across all three terminals.

This significant increase in passenger traffic in 2024 is largely attributed to the easing of travel restrictions, facilitated by the President of Algeria’s decision to allow members of the diaspora to enter the country using their national identity cards. Additionally, Air Algérie is offering discounts of up to 60%, further encouraging travel.

Key Initiatives and Improvements

  1. Increased Flight Capacity: The rise to 53 flights indicates a commitment to accommodating more pilgrims.

  2. Enhanced Facilities: The SGSIA is focusing on improving the travel experience for both pilgrims and their companions through designated facilities and dedicated services.

  3. Logistical Improvements: By recruiting seasonal staff for baggage handling, the airport aims to significantly reduce waiting times.

  4. Airport Capacity Expansion: By reallocating flight operations, the airport seeks to boost its capacity in anticipation of record passenger numbers.

  5. Support for the Diaspora: Recent policy changes and fare reductions have made travel more accessible to Algerians abroad.

Overall, these efforts demonstrate a proactive approach in managing pilgrimage-related travel while enhancing the overall passenger experience at Algiers International Airport.
