15 ans de prison ferme à l’encontre d’un commerçant impliqué dans une affaire de saisie d’une quantité importante de bananes à Oran
Summary: Court Sentence for Speculation Involvement in Algeria
On Monday, the Essenia Court in Oran, Algeria, sentenced a merchant to 15 years in prison for his involvement in a significant case of illicit speculation involving bananas. According to a statement from the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the same tribunal, the case came to light when the National Gendarmerie (GN) seized 3,718 kilograms of bananas on March 14, 2025, intended for illegal speculative activities.
The merchant, identified by the initials N.A., was apprehended and brought before the Essenia Court on March 17, 2025, for immediate arraignment for engaging in illicit speculation. He received a stern sentence consisting of 15 years in prison along with a hefty fine of 10,000,000 Algerian Dinars (DA).
In addition to the prison sentence, the court mandated the confiscation of the seized goods and prohibited the merchant from engaging in any commercial activities for five years. The ruling also included the cancellation of his business registration and required that the judgment be published in a national newspaper, supported by a mandate for the merchant’s detention during the hearing.
This case underscores the Algerian government’s stringent measures against illicit trading practices, particularly in agricultural commodities, reflecting a broader effort to curb speculation in crucial sectors of the economy.
